The American Society of Plumbing Engineers (ASPE), Certified in Plumbing Design (CPD) certification is for engineers and designers of plumbing systems. The CPD is the only international credential program in the plumbing engineering field and sets the standards for leadership within the industry. Candidates must possess a minimum of four years of practical experience in a position of responsibility for the design of plumbing systems and possess a baccalaureate degree in a field related to engineering. In lieu of an accredited degree, candidates may substitute up to an additional four years of practical experience in the design of plumbing systems, for a total of eight years, or be granted a credit of one-half year of practical experience for each full year of education in an accredited curriculum related to plumbing engineering. Candidates must take a written exam.

Education and/or Experience REQUIREMENTS

Candidate must have a minimum of four years of practical experience in a position of responsibility for the design of plumbing systems and possess a baccalaureate degree in a field related to engineering.

Candidate may substitute up to an additional four years of practical experience in the design of plumbing systems, for a total of eight years, or be granted a credit of one-half year of practical experience for each full year of education in an accredited curriculum related to plumbing engineering.

Written Exam

  • Gathering Information and Administration
    • Identify the scope of work, existing physical conditions, and project team contacts
    • Determine applicable requirements of authorities having jurisdiction, utility availability and budgetary constraints
    • Prepare and monitor work plans and schedules
    • Coordinate work with other members of the professional design team, e.g., HVAC, electrical, etc.
  • Design
    • Identify the required systems
    • Establish the design criteria for each system
    • Coordinate that system with each other and all other building elements
    • Design each system
  • Specifications
    • Determine the format and coordinate with the design
    • Describe the systems to be used
    • Coordinate plumbing specifications with all other specifications
  • Construction Services
    • Review submittals for compliance with contract documents
    • Review the installation for compliance with contract documents
    • Conduct witnesses system test(s)

  • The CPD certification must be renewed every two years. CPD certification holders must earn 2.4 CEUs within the two-year certification period.

Current Coast Guard policy states all credentials listed on CG COOL may be reimbursed assuming the enlisted service member meets the eligibility requirements as outlined in the Coast Guard Voluntary Credentialing Program Policy (COMDTINST 1540.1(series))
