ASI Description

Identifies positions requiring soldiers to perform unit and direct support and general support maintenance and calibration of electrical power plant monitoring and control instrumentation equipment.

In addition to obtaining certifications in your field, advanced education is another way to enhance job performance.

Enlisted Soldiers and Warrant Officers can review Associate and Bachelor degrees in their assigned military discipline, technical field, or leadership to assist in a clear pathway to completing a degree.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Associate Electronics Technician (CETa) is designed for technicians who have less than two years of experience or training in electronics. The CETa is the foundation for ETA’s journeyman, senior, and master specialty, and master certification programs. CETa applicants must meet the experience or training requirement and pass a written exam.

The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET), Certified Electronics Technician - Associate-Level (Associate CET), is an entry-level certification for technicians and students with under four years of experience and validates the technician’s knowledge of basic electronics, including math, DC and AC circuts, transistors and troubleshooting. The Associate CET is also a pre-requisite for ISCET Journeyman level certifications. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The International Society of Automation (ISA), Certified Control Systems Technician – Level I (CCST-I) credential offers third-party recognition of a technician's knowledge and skills in automation and control. CCSTs understand process control looks and process control systems, including computer systems. CCSTs calibrate, document, troubleshoot, and repair/replace instrumentation for systems that measure and control level, temperature, pressure, flow, and other process variables. CCST certifications are available at three levels, depending on the level of experience, training and education, with Level I being the most basic. Candidates must meet a combination of education and experience. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Industrial Electronics Technician (IND) certification is an intermediate journeyman-level credential for electronics technicians. Candidates applying for the IND certification are expected to understand basic industrial electronics concepts applicable to various specialty areas of industrial electronics; Additionally, candidates must meet minimum experience requirements of at least two years working in the industry, this may include electronics training. IND candidates must be knowledgeable and have skills in the following areas: Amplifiers, Optical Wiring, Block Diagrams Schematics, Power Supplies, Test Equipment Tools, Mathematics, Computers Digital Concepts, Safety, Satellite Wireless Data, Communications, Cabling, Troubleshooting, Motors, Programmable Logic Controllers, and Software. Candidate must pass a written exam.

Renewal Period: 3 years

The American Society for Quality (ASQ), Certified Calibration Technician (CST) tests, calibrates, maintains and repairs electrical, mechanical, electromechanical, analytical and electronic measuring, recording, and indicating instruments and equipment for conformance to established standards. Candidates must have five years of on-the-job experience in one or more of the areas of the Certified Calibration Technician Body of Knowledge. If the candidates have completed a degree from a college, university, or technical school with accreditation accepted by ASQ, part of the five-year experience requirement will be waived. Candidates must pass a written examination.

The Electrical Generating Systems Association (EGSA), Electrical Generator Systems Technician Certification - Journeyman is an intermediate-level certification that demonstrates an individual's knowledge of on-site power generation equipment and systems. Electrical Generator Systems Technician Journeymen have knowledge of electricity, mechanical, and electrical components and the interactions between them and are proficient in the installation, service, maintenance, and repair of on-site power generation systems. Candidate must meet experience eligibility requirements and pass an exam.

The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Electrical Power Testing - Level I credential is an entry-level certification for electrical technicians who test equipment used in the production, transmission, and distribution of electrical power. The certification validates a technician’s knowledge required to inspect, test, and maintain electrical power equipment. Electrical Power Testing - Level I technicians work under the supervision of a higher-level technician and perform duties such as isolating and ground power equipment safely, connecting test equipment, and conducting and documenting standard tests of basic single-function equipment. Candidates must meet experience requirements and pass a written exam.

Electrical Power Testing - Level III technicians manage switching procedures, perform tests of complex equipment, analyze test and equipment data, plan work and manage teams. Candidates must meet experience requirements and pass a written exam.

The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Electrical Power Testing - Level IV certification is an advanced-level credential for technicians who inspect, test, and maintain equipment used in the production, transmission, and distribution of electrical power. Electrical Power Testing - Level IV technicians conduct tests of complex metering and relay systems, evaluate tests, test equipment, test results, power system performance, recommend actions to maintain or improve system performance, and lead multi-team projects. Candidates must meet experience requirements and pass a written exam.
