The credentials listed in the "Related Credentials" section may be related to some of the duties performed by any Soldier regardless of his or her military occupational specialty (MOS).  They are grouped into broad categories, such as Physical Fitness, Information Technology, Quality Assurance, and Administrative and can be filtered by category.  Note that it is important to carefully assess the eligibility requirements of the credential to determine if you will qualify.  Clicking on the credential title will provide you with information on the eligibility requirements and exam topics.

In addition to obtaining certifications in your field, advanced education is another way to enhance job performance.

Continuing Education

Enlisted Soldiers and Warrant Officers can review Associate and Bachelor degrees in their assigned military discipline, technical field, or leadership to assist in a clear pathway to completing a degree.

Star credentials are MOS enhancing, as designated by the Proponent. MOS enhancing credentials are directly related to an MOS or ASI, are taught either partially or completely as part of a Program of Instruction (POI), and improves the MOS technical proficiency.

Proponent Funded

The International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), Certified Administrative Professional (CAP) credential is recommended for mid-career level administrative professionals. CAPs should have basic knowledge of office technology, records administration, and management, and know how to apply the principles of human relations and communications. Candidates must meet a combination of experience and education requirements and pass a written exam.

Renewal Period: 5 years

The Institute of Certified Records Managers (ICRM), Certified Records Manager (CRM) certification requires candidates to meet both educational and work experience certification requirements. A minimum of one year of professional records and information management (RIM) work experience is required, regardless of the level of education a candidate possesses. The minimum acceptable education is graduation from high school (completion of 12 grades) or equivalent (e.g., GED credential or equivalency diploma) in conjunction with five years of professional level RIM experience. The preferred qualifications are a college degree (four-year or bachelor’s degree) and one year of professional RIM experience. CRM candidates must pass a six-part written examination.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Certified Personal Trainer (ACSM-CPT) certification recognizes fitness professionals who use research-based techniques to help people of all fitness levels reach personal fitness goals. The ACSM-CPT facilitates motivation and adherence as well as develops and administers programs designed to enhance muscular strength, endurance, flexibility, cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, and/or any of the motor skill related components of physical fitness. ACSM-CPTs have the practical and scientific knowledge to work in a variety of facilities, including health clubs, gyms, university, corporate, and community or public fitness centers, and hold positions ranging from freelance to full-time. Applicants must be 18 years of age and meet the minimum academic eligibility requirement. Applicants must pass a written exam.

The American Council on Exercise (ACE), Group Fitness Instructor (GFI) certification is an entry-level health and fitness professional credential. GFI is recommended for those interested in leading fitness classes of any variety. Candidates must be over the age of 18, must have completed high school (or the equivalent), and must hold valid current adult CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) certificates. Candidates must take a written exam.

Renewal Period: 2 years

Personal Trainer Certification is designed for fitness trainers providing one-on-one or small-group fitness instruction. This is an entry level certification and requires applicants to pass the American Council on Exercise (ACE) Personal Trainer Certification exam. Personal Trainer Certification exam validates the applicant's knowledge of risk factor screening, fitness assessment, nutrition, exercise science, exercise programming and progressions, instructional and spotting techniques, lifestyle modification and professional scope of practice. The applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, be at least 18 years of age, and hold current adult CPR and AED certificate.

The National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Certified Personal Trainer (NSCA-CPT) credential is an entry-level health and fitness certification. CPTs assess, motivate, educate and train clients regarding their personal health and fitness needs. CPTs design safe and effective exercise programs, provide guidance to help their clients achieve health and fitness goals, and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Candidates are required to have a high school diploma or its equivalent and must also have current CPR/AED certificates.

The United States Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is for individuals who drive certain Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs). There are three classes of CDLs with endorsements for specialized qualifications for vehicles like school buses, tank trucks, and tractor trailers. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires drivers to obtain and hold a CDL if they operate in interstate, intrastate, or foreign commerce and drive a vehicle that meets one or more of the classifications of a CMV described on the FMSCA website. FMSCA has developed and issued standards for state testing and licensing of CDL holders. These standards require state governments to issue CDLs to certain CMV drivers only after the driver passes knowledge and skills testing that is administered by the state and related to the type of vehicle the driver expects to operate.

The Project Management Institute (PMI), Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is an entry-level certification for project practitioners. Designed for those with less project experience, the CAPM demonstrates an understanding of the fundamental knowledge, terminology and processes of effective project management. The written exam covers project management areas such as initiation, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, closing, and professional and social responsibility. Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalent and at least 1500 hours professional experience on a project team or 23 hours of project management education.

The National Exercise and Sports Trainers Association (NESTA), Certified Personal Fitness Trainer certification is an entry-level credential aimed at individuals interested in leading clients toward healthy lifestyle options through physical activity, training, and education. Candidates must be over 18 years old and have a current emergency Cardiac Care (CPR) Certification card or BLS (Basic Life Support) card in place of CPR card. Candidates must pass a written examination.

The National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA), Certified Personal Trainer (CPT-NETA) is an entry-level health and fitness credential for individuals wishing to assure stakeholders (such as potential employers or consumers) of their competency as an exercise professional. The exam requires candidates demonstrate general knowledge in various skill areas to reflect such competency such as: exercise science, health and fitness assessments, exercising programming for healthy adults, principals of nutrition and weight management, and dynamic of communication and behavioral change. CPTs work in the fitness training industry to help clients get active and stay healthy. Candidates must take a written exam.

The National Federation of Professional Trainers (NFPT), Certified Personal Trainer (CPT-NFPT) is an entry-level health and fitness credential for professionals wishing to assure stakeholders (such as potential employers or consumers) of their competency level. The exam requires candidates demonstrate general knowledge in various skill areas to reflect such competency such as: applied exercise sciences, training methodologies and fitness components, injury treatment and prevention, and professional practices. CPTs work in the fitness training industry to help clients get active and stay healthy.

The National Council on Strength & Fitness (NCSF) Certified Personal Trainer (CPT-NCSF) is an entry level health and fitness credential for individuals wishing to assure stakeholders (such as potential employers or consumers) of their competency as an exercise professional. It is designed for trainers who will be providing one-on-one fitness training instruction. While not required, it is recommended that candidates have practical experience in the health and fitness field. It should also be noted that while NCSF offers paid courses for those taking the exam, taking them is not a prerequisite to qualify for the exam. The exam is based on universally accepted exercise theory.

Renewal Period: 2 years

National Exercise Trainers Association (NETA), Certified Group Exercise Instructor is an entry-level credential for individuals interested in leading exercise in a group setting. The Group Exercise Instructors are fitness professionals who promote enhanced health and increased fitness. Group Fitness Instructors apply knowledge and skill to facilitate positive health and fitness outcomes among diverse populations using a variety of class formats and exercise modalities. There is no prior fitness related experience, training or certification that is required to complete the Certified Group Exercise Instructor certification exam process. Training is available, but not required to take the written exam.

Renewal Period: 5 years

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Associate Safety Professional certification (ASP) validates an individual's knowledge and experience in the safety profession. ASP certifies an individual's ability to perform at least 50% of professional-level safety duties in safety, health, environment and ergonomics. Safety professionals are required to make worksite assessments to determine risks, potential hazards and controls, evaluate risks and hazard control measures for equipment, systems, facilities and processes, investigate incidents, maintain and evaluate incident and loss records, and prepare emergency response plans. ASP candidates are required to have a minimum of a bachelor's degree in any field or an associate's in safety, health, or the environment, or a closely related field. In addition, candidates must have one year of professional safety experience where safety is at least 50%, preventative, professional level with breadth and depth of safety duties. The National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) is an entry-level health and fitness credential for professionals wishing to assure stakeholders (such as potential employers or consumers) of their competency level. It is a goal-specific program designed for individuals seeking physical training professionalization aimed at optimal results, accurate assessments, and developing and modifying exercises in a safe and effective manner that is adaptable to any client. The CPT-NASM requires comprehensive knowledge of human movement science, functional anatomy, physiology and kinesiology, as well as functional assessment and program design. Candidates must have current Emergency Cardiac Care (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification prior to taking the exam.

The National Council for Certified Personal Trainers (NCCPT), Certified Personal Trainer (NCCPT-CPT) certification is aimed at candidates who have the knowledge and skills to guide clients toward achieving personal fitness and health goals. The NCCPT-CPT requires candidates to be at least 18 years old or have a signed parental consent form and have a valid, current Adult CPR certification card. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification is an entry-level certification designed to help individuals take the first step toward a career as an IT professional or developer. Students, those changing careers or just starting, or those exploring a technology career are best suited towards earning an MTA certification. The next step in the Microsoft certification path is Microsoft Technology Specialist (MCTS), which requires hands-on experience with the Microsoft technology platform. There are a number of MTA exams available in the area of IT infrastructure, database or developer. Passing one exam earns the MTA certification.

Note that individuals who already have an in-depth understanding of and hands-on experience with Microsoft technologies, might want to start with a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) certification or one of the Professional Series tracks. Please review the VA website to check which Microsoft exams in this certification track are eligible for GI Bill reimbursement.

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), Group Exercise Instructor (ACSM-GEI) certification is for fitness professionals who teach, lead, and motivate individuals through intentionally designed exercise classes. ACSM-GEIs are high-achievers inside and outside the group studio with planning effective, exercise science-based group sessions for different fitness levels and possessing motivational and leadership techniques that help participants of classes achieve fitness goals. ACSM-GEIs have excellent communication skills that are used while working in gyms and health clubs, community, university, and corporate facilities. ACSM-GEI certification applicants must be 18 years of age or older, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and possess Adult CPR/AED certification with a practical hands-on skills component. Applicants must also pass a written exam.

The PTA Global, Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) credential enables work as a professionally certified personal trainer. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 18 years old, and hold a current CPR/AED certification. Candidates must pass a written exam covering the topics of program design, human sciences, human behavior, workplace practices, nutrition, and special populations.

The International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), Certified Information Privacy Professionals/United States (CIPP/US) is a credential for those who serve the data protection, information auditing, information security, legal compliance and/or risk management needs of their organizations. The CIPP demonstrates a foundational understanding of broad global concepts of privacy and data protection law and practice, including, jurisdictional laws, regulations and enforcement models; essential privacy concepts and principals; legal requirements for handling and transferring data and more. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The International Association for Six Sigma Certification (IASSC), Certified Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt (ICYB) is a professional who is well versed in the foundational elements of the Lean Six Sigma Methodology. ICYBs possess a thorough understanding of the elementary aspects of the Lean Six Sigma Method including competence in the subject matters contained within the phases of Define, Measure, and Control (DMC) as defined by the IASSC Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt Body of Knowledge and understand how to implement, perform, interpret and apply Lean Six Sigma in a skilled yet limited and / or supportive context. ICYBs lead limited improvement projects and/or serve as team members on more complex improvement projects lead by a Certified Green Belt or Certified Black Belt, typically in a part-time role. There are no prerequisites for the ICYB. Candidates must take a written exam.

The ACTION, Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) is an entry-level fitness certification. Personal Trainers work with a variety of clients, perform subjective and objective fitness assessments, develop safe and effective exercise programs based on principles of exercise science, anatomy, and assist clients in the identification and selection of fitness related goals. CPT candidates are assessed on various topics including, anatomy, biomechanics, client assessment, program design, safety, legal and business. Candidates must take and pass a written exam.

The Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS): Microsoft Office 2013 credential is an entry-level certification for individuals who wish to demonstrate expertise in using Microsoft Office programs. Key technologies include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, SharePoint and OneNote. Candidates must pass one certification exam. There are no experience requirements for this certification but Microsoft Learning recommends that a candidate have hands-on experience with the product prior to testing.

The World Instructor Training Schools (WITS), Certified Personal Trainer Level 1 (CPT-Level 1) certification is for individuals who possess entry-level fitness specific competency and a commitment to consumer safety. Level 1 CPTs help to improve the health and fitness for clients ranging in age, health, and fitness status through the development and implementation of fitness programs required for practice in the U.S. service industry. Candidates must meet several eligibility requirements. Candidates must also pass a written exam and a practical exam.

The Resilience-Building Leader Program, Resilience-Building Leadership Professional (RBLP) certification is for front-line supervisors who can demonstrate their competence for building resilient teams. The RBLP certification is the first of three progressive levels of certification in the Resilience-Building Leadership Program. RBLP candidates are required to meet an education and/or experience eligibility requirement. Candidates must pass an oral exam.

Low

May be difficult to attain: Credential is related to the duties performed within the military occupation, the minimum education requirement is a Bachelor's degree, and/or minimum experience is 10 or more years.
