MOS Description

The parachute rigger supervises or packs and repairs cargo and personnel parachutes, and rigs equipment and supply containers for airdrop. For more information on MOS 92R, see this Army website.

Federal Aviation Administration

At the FAA, Air Traffic Control Specialists (ATCS) have three distinct areas of specialization :

  1. Terminal (Tower) Controllers, who control air traffic at airports and give pilots taxiing and takeoff instruction, air traffic clearances and advice
  2. En Route Center Controllers, who give aircraft instructions, air traffic clearances, and advice regarding flight conditions while en route between airports
  3. Flight Service Station Controllers, who provide preflight, in-flight and emergency assistance to all pilots on request

In addition to an Air Traffic Controller certificate, air traffic control specialists must possess :

  • A rating for the facility to which they are assigned. This facility rating requires a demonstrated knowledge of the kind and location of radio aids to air navigation, the terrain, the landmarks, the communications systems and circuits, and the procedures peculiar to the area covered by the facility. All required certificates and ratings must be obtained within time limits established by the agency management.
  • At least a second class Medical Examination detailed in 14 CFR Part 67. Medical examinations must be conducted by a FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner.

Although there are provisions for hiring individuals with no previous air traffic controller experience, as of early 2002, the FAA is only hiring graduates of FAA-approved post-secondary educational programs, current or former federal employees (including former military members eligible for a Veteran's Readjustment Appointment), or Retired Military Air Traffic Controllers for positions in the En Route Center or Terminal specialty areas.

To be eligible for the program, you must meet all of the following criteria :

  • Be on terminal leave pending retirement from active duty military service or have retired from active duty military service on or after September 17, 1999.
  • Have received either an air traffic control specialist certification and/or a facility rating according to FAA standards.
  • Meet all application, qualification and position requirements, including applicable medical and security requirements.

Controllers hired under this program are given time-limited appointments, meaning that their appointments will have a specific termination date attached to them. The initial appointment may be up to 10 years and may not exceed the last day of the month in which the controller turns age 56. Appointments can be extended for up to five years at a time.

You will be required to submit a Retired Military Controller Specialist Job Application and proof of your retired status (Form DD 214). Do not submit the OF-612 federal job application form. Other FAA Application Forms you may need are located at the FAA website.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Senior Parachute Rigger certificate is one of two types of the Parachute Rigger Certificate: Senior and Master. A Senior Parachute Rigger is considered a journeyman technician. A Senior Parachute Rigger may pack, as well as maintain, a parachute by making minor repairs. Applicants must meet the experience eligibility requirements as listed in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Applicants must pass a written and practical exam.

Renewal Period: 5 years

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is an intermediate-level credential for professionals who support workplace safety practices. CSPs conduct worksite assessments, determine risk, measure hazards and controls, evaluate risk and hazard control measures, investigate incidents, maintain incident and loss records, and prepare emergency response plans. CSP candidates must meet experiential requirements that relate to the field of workplace safety. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Renewal Period: 5 years

The Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification validates an individual's knowledge and experience in the safety profession. ASP certifies an individual's ability to perform at least 50% of professional-level safety duties in safety, health, environment, and ergonomics. Safety professionals are required to make worksite assessments to determine risks, potential hazards and controls, evaluate risks and hazard control measures for equipment, systems, facilities, and processes, investigate incidents, maintain and evaluate incident and loss records, and prepare emergency response plans. ASP candidates must meet a combination of education and experience requirements. Candidates must take a written exam.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Master Parachute Rigger is an upper-level certification. Master Parachute Riggers perform major repairs and alterations on the reserve and harness-and-container system within manufacturers' guidelines on parachutes for which he/she is rated for. The Master Parachute Rigger certification has four type ratings: seat; back; chest; and lap. Master Parachute Riggers also supervise other persons in packing, maintaining, or altering any type of parachute for which the certificated parachute rigger is rated for. Candidates must meet FAA's age, experience, knowledge, and skill requirements to be eligible for the exam. Candidates must pass a written, oral, and practical exam.

The United States Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is for individuals who drive certain Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs). There are three classes of CDLs with endorsements for specialized qualifications for vehicles like school buses, tank trucks, and tractor trailers. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires drivers to obtain and hold a CDL if they operate in interstate, intrastate, or foreign commerce and drive a vehicle that meets one or more of the classifications of a CMV described on the FMSCA website. FMSCA has developed and issued standards for state testing and licensing of CDL holders. These standards require state governments to issue CDLs to certain CMV drivers only after the driver passes knowledge and skills testing that is administered by the state and related to the type of vehicle the driver expects to operate.

The American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS), Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) certification is aimed towards professionals involved in career fields such as Production and Inventory Management, Operations, Supply Chain Management, Procurement, Materials Management, and Purchasing. The CPIM certification does not have eligibility requirements at this time. Candidates must pass two exams (Part 1 and Part 2) within a three-year period to earn the CPIM certification.

Moderate ease of attainment: Credential is related to the duties performed within the military occupation, the minimum education requirement = Associate's and/or prerequisite and/or minimum experience = more than 2 years and less than 10 years of experience.

Low

May be difficult to attain: Credential is related to the duties performed within the military occupation, the minimum education requirement is a Bachelor's degree, and/or minimum experience is 10 or more years.
