MOS 68E Dental Specialist

MOS Description

The dental specialist assists the dental officer in prevention, examination, and treatment of diseases of teeth and oral region, or assists with the management of dental treatment facilities. For more information on MOS 68E, see this Army website.

Enlisted Soldiers and Warrant Officers can review Associate and Bachelor degrees in their assigned military discipline, technical field, or leadership to assist in a clear pathway to completing a degree.

The Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) is an intermediate-level certification for dental technicians and dental office professionals who assist dentists, set up dental equipment, prepare patients for treatment, and keep records. CDAs have the knowledge and applied skill-level necessary to provide general chairside assisting, practice radiation health and safety, support infection control activities, and perform other dental assisting-related work requirements. CDAs fill a variety of roles in the dental office; some of these include preparing patients for dental procedures, ensuring sterility in the dental environment, assisting dentists during procedures by providing tools and materials, working with suppliers to schedule deliveries, helping patients schedule appointments, teaching patients about proper oral health, and taking patient x-rays. Applicants for the CDA are required to meet both education and experience requirements and take a written exam.

Renewal Period: 3 years

The American Medical Technologists (AMT), Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) is an entry-level certification for professionals who assist dentists, set up equipment, prepare patients for treatments, and keep records. RDAs are required to have the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification and must meet some combination of educational or experiential requirements. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC), Certified Dental Technician - Ceramics (CDT-C), is an intermediate level certification that validates knowledge and applied skill level necessary to perform the tasks required of a fixed prosthodontics - ceramic dental technician who manufactures dental prosthetics including bridges, crowns and dentures according to specifications dentists send to them. Candidates must meet education and experience requirements and pass the comprehensive, specialty, and practical examinations.

The National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC), Recognized Graduate (RG) certifies that individuals have met industry standards of required knowledge and applied skills in dental laboratory technology through the successful completion of education and/or experience, independent examination(s), and compliance with continuing technical education requirements. RG candidates must pass the RG exam and provide proof of graduation from a National Board for Certification in Dental Laboratory Technology (NBC)-recognized educational program.

Dental technicians manufacture dental prosthetics including bridges, crowns and dentures according to specifications dentists send to them. CDT-CDs have knowledge of orthodontic appliances, implants, crowns and bridges, partial dentures, and ceramics. Candidates must meet education and experience requirements and pass the comprehensive, specialty, and practical examinations.

CDT-PDs have knowledge of orthodontic appliances, implants, crowns and bridges, complete dentures, partial dentures, and ceramics. Candidates must meet education and experience requirements and pass the comprehensive, specialty, and practical examinations.

CDT-CBs have knowledge of orthodontic appliances, implants, crowns and bridges, complete dentures, partial dentures, and ceramics. Candidates must meet education and experience requirements and pass the comprehensive, specialty, and practical examinations.

Medium

Moderate ease of attainment: Credential is related to the duties performed within the military occupation, the minimum education requirement = Associate's and/or prerequisite and/or minimum experience = more than 2 years and less than 10 years of experience.

Low

May be difficult to attain: Credential is related to the duties performed within the military occupation, the minimum education requirement is a Bachelor's degree, and/or minimum experience is 10 or more years.
