MOS Description

The aircraft electrician supervises, inspects and performs aviation unit (AVUM), intermediate (AVIM) and depot electrical maintenance on aircraft electrical systems. For more information on MOS 15F, see this Army website.

At the FAA, Air Traffic Control Specialists (ATCS) have three distinct areas of specialization :

  1. Terminal (Tower) Controllers, who control air traffic at airports and give pilots taxiing and takeoff instruction, air traffic clearances and advice
  2. En Route Center Controllers, who give aircraft instructions, air traffic clearances, and advice regarding flight conditions while en route between airports
  3. Flight Service Station Controllers, who provide preflight, in-flight and emergency assistance to all pilots on request

In addition to an Air Traffic Controller certificate, air traffic control specialists must possess :

  • A rating for the facility to which they are assigned. This facility rating requires a demonstrated knowledge of the kind and location of radio aids to air navigation, the terrain, the landmarks, the communications systems and circuits, and the procedures peculiar to the area covered by the facility. All required certificates and ratings must be obtained within time limits established by the agency management.
  • At least a second class Medical Examination detailed in 14 CFR Part 67. Medical examinations must be conducted by a FAA-designated Aviation Medical Examiner.

Although there are provisions for hiring individuals with no previous air traffic controller experience, as of early 2002, the FAA is only hiring graduates of FAA-approved post-secondary educational programs, current or former federal employees (including former military members eligible for a Veteran's Readjustment Appointment), or Retired Military Air Traffic Controllers for positions in the En Route Center or Terminal specialty areas.

To be eligible for the program, you must meet all of the following criteria :

  • Be on terminal leave pending retirement from active duty military service or have retired from active duty military service on or after September 17, 1999.
  • Have received either an air traffic control specialist certification and/or a facility rating according to FAA standards.
  • Meet all application, qualification and position requirements, including applicable medical and security requirements.

Controllers hired under this program are given time-limited appointments, meaning that their appointments will have a specific termination date attached to them. The initial appointment may be up to 10 years and may not exceed the last day of the month in which the controller turns age 56. Appointments can be extended for up to five years at a time.

You will be required to submit a Retired Military Controller Specialist Job Application and proof of your retired status (Form DD 214). Do not submit the OF-612 federal job application form. Other FAA Application Forms you may need are located at the FAA website.

Eligibility requirements, privileges, and performance standards for Air Traffic Tower Operators and Aircraft Dispatchers are detailed in 14 CFR Part 65.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) / Joint Service Aviation Maintenance Technician Certification Council (JSAMTCC) Airman Knowledge Testing (AKT) Program allows active duty Military, National Guard & Reserve personnel, Retired Military, DOD Civilians, and Military dependents the opportunity to take the Mechanic (A&P) license written tests free of charge at certain locations. You must have FAA approval to test, to be eligible for this service. The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Associate Electronics Technician (CETa) is designed for technicians who have less than two years of experience or training in electronics. The CETa is the foundation for ETA’s journeyman, senior, and master specialty, and master certification programs. CETa applicants must meet the experience or training requirement and pass a written exam.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC), General Radiotelephone Operator License (PG) is an intermediate-level technician license. A PG is required to adjust, maintain, or internally repair FCC licensed radiotelephone transmitters in the aviation, maritime, and international fixed public radio services. A PG is also required to operate: any compulsory equipped ship radiotelephone station operating with more than 1500 watts of peak envelope power; and voluntarily equipped ship and aeronautical (including aircraft) stations with more than 1000 watts of peak envelope power. FCC requires candidates to be a legal resident of the United States and be fluent in the English language. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET), Certified Electronics Technician - Associate-Level (Associate CET), is an entry-level certification for technicians and students with under four years of experience and validates the technician’s knowledge of basic electronics, including math, DC and AC circuts, transistors and troubleshooting. The Associate CET is also a pre-requisite for ISCET Journeyman level certifications. Candidates must pass a written exam.

Inspection Authorization (IA). The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) initiated the issuance of the inspection authorization (IA) more than 35 years ago. This system of allowing qualified mechanics the privilege of performing certain inspections has served well in the maintenance of the U.S. civil fleet. The attainment of an IA and performance of the duties thereof greatly enhance the privileges and responsibilities of the aircraft mechanic. Candidates must hold a currently effective mechanic certificate with both an airframe rating and a powerplant rating, each of which is currently effective and has been in effect for a total of at least 3 years; have been actively engaged, for at least the 2-year period before the date of application, in maintaining aircraft certificated and maintained in accordance with this chapter; and must have available the equipment, facilities, and inspection data necessary to properly inspect airframes, powerplants, propellers, or any related part or appliance. Candidates must also pass a multiple-choice examination, which focuses on the ability to inspect according to safety standards for returning aircraft to service, after major repairs and major alterations and annual and progressive inspection performed. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Mechanic (Powerplant) is a mid-level certification. Powerplant mechanics are authorized to work on engines and do limited work on propellers. Mechanics work in hangars, repair stations, or out on the airfield on the "flight lines" where aircraft park. Applicants must meet FAA's training and experience requirements. Applicants must pass written and practical exams.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Mechanic (Airframe) credential is for mechanics who perform or supervise the maintenance, preventive maintenance or alteration of airframes. Airframe mechanics are authorized to work on any part of the aircraft except the instruments, power plants, and propellers. Airframe mechanics work in hangars, repair stations, or out on the airfield on the "flight lines" where aircraft park. Mechanic (Airframe) applicants must be at least 18 years old, be able to read, write, speak and understand English, and meet education, training and experience requirements. Applicants must also pass written, oral, and practical exams.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Mechanic (Airframe & Powerplant) is a senior-level certification. Airframe mechanics are authorized to work on any part of the aircraft except the instruments, power plants, and propellers. Powerplant mechanics are authorized to work on engines and perform limited work on propellers. Combination airframe and powerplant mechanics, called A&P mechanics, work on all parts of the plane except the instruments. Most mechanics working on civilian aircraft today are A&P mechanics. Applicants must meet FAA's training and experience requirements. Applicants must pass written and practical exams.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Avionics Electronics Technicians (AVN) certification validates the knowledge and skills of individuals who install, maintain and adjust electronics equipment, cabling and the accessories used in aviation communications and control equipment. AVNs demonstrate an understanding of avionics systems, cabling, computers and digital concepts, amplifiers, interfacing, antennas and transmission lines components, mathematics, network topologies and infrastructures, people relations, optical cabling, safety, test equipment and tools and satellite communications. Candidates must pass a written exam.

The ASTM International, NCATT Aircraft Electronics Technician (AET) is the primary NCATT certification and is required for ASTM International endorsements in the career field. The AET certification recognizes the knowledge base of the advanced aerospace technician and promotes integrity, safety, and professionalism in the aerospace workforce. AET knowledge and skills include basic electronics facts, terminology, and principles, common maintenance practices, fundamentals of equipment maintenance, and aircraft fundamentals. There are no AET eligibility requirements. The AET written exam is open to all individuals regardless of career field, training, education or experience.

ASTM International, NCATT Foreign Object Elimination (FOE) recognizes the knowledge base of the advanced aerospace technician and promotes integrity, safety, and professionalism in the aerospace workforce. FOE knowledge and skills include housekeeping, tool accountability, hardware accountability, lost items, physical entry and personnel control, reporting and investigating, material handling, parts protections, hazardous materials, wildlife/environment, and Foreign Object Damage (FOD) effects. There are no FOE eligibility requirements. The FOE written exam is open to all individuals regardless of career field, training, education or experience. Candidates must pass the written exam.

The Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I), Fiber Optics Technician (Outside Plant) (FOT-OSP) is an intermediate-level certification for professionals who terminate, test and troubleshoot single-mode fiber optic communication systems. FOT-OSPs understand optical loss budgets, not to exceed loss budgets and has the knowledge and skills required for troubleshooting single-mode OSP fiber optic communications systems addressing the roles of attenuation, dispersion and refection and how to identify and troubleshoot each. Though ETA-I does not require any specific education, training, or experience for the standalone FOT-OSP, candidates are strongly encouraged to have the requisite knowledge and experience necessary to challenge the exam.

The National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET), Electrical Power Testing - Level I credential is an entry-level certification for electrical technicians who test equipment used in the production, transmission, and distribution of electrical power. The certification validates a technician’s knowledge required to inspect, test, and maintain electrical power equipment. Electrical Power Testing - Level I technicians work under the supervision of a higher-level technician and perform duties such as isolating and ground power equipment safely, connecting test equipment, and conducting and documenting standard tests of basic single-function equipment. Candidates must meet experience requirements and pass a written exam.

FOT-ISPs service, terminate, troubleshoot, test, splice and fix optic transmission cable, connection devices, links and spans used in premises, LANs, enterprise and data center installations. Prior experience in optical fiber cabling and understanding of optical fiber transmissions basics is recommended. Candidates must understand the National Electrical Code (NEC) safety regulations. Candidates must pass both a written and practical exam.

The Electronics Technicians Association (ETA-I), Microwave Radio Technician (MRT) credential is for technicians who install, align, use and maintain point-to-point microwave radio systems.  MRTs have knowledge of basic concepts, including identification and safety requirements of radio frequency. There are no prerequisites for this certification, but prior experience with radio systems and equipment is recommended.  Candidates must pass a written exam.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Aircraft Dispatcher certification is for individuals who exercise responsibility with the pilot in command in the operational control of a flight. Aircraft Dispatchers assist in planning flight paths, taking into account aircraft performance and loading; enroute winds; thunderstorm and turbulence forecasts; airspace restrictions; and airport conditions. Aircraft Dispatchers usually share responsibility for the exercise of operational control, which gives them the authority to divert, delay, or cancel a flight. Candidates must meet the training and experience eligibility requirements as listed in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). Candidates must pass a written and practical exam.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Flight Engineer certification is a senior-level certification. Flight engineers, sometimes called second officers, are technical experts who are thoroughly familiar with the operation and function of various airplane components. The principal function of the flight engineer is to assist the pilots in the operation of the airplane. The Flight Engineer certification has six ratings: Flight Engineer Turbojet/Basic; Flight Engineer Turboprop/Basic; Flight Engineer Reciprocating Engine/Basic; Flight Engineer Turbojet; Flight Engineer Turboprop; and Flight Engineer Reciprocating Engine. Candidates must meet FAA's academic and experience eligibility requirements. Candidates must pass both the written and practical exams.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Repairman certification is a mid-level certification required to perform specialized maintenance on aircraft, light sport and experimental. Aircraft repairman also work at aircraft repair stations licensed to perform additional aircraft maintenance and repair to all parts of the aircraft. Repairman ratings should coincide with the specialized skill or talent required from the person employed to perform the specific job. Candidate must have practical experience in the procedure, practices, inspection methods, materials, tools, machine tools, and equipment generally used in the maintenance duties of the specific job for which the individual is employed and certificated.

The SpaceTEC, Certified Aerospace Technician Core is an entry-level certification that covers general knowledge in the areas of introduction to aerospace, applied mechanics, basic electricity, test and measurements, materials and processes, and aerospace safety. To earn the Certified Aerospace Technician Core certification, candidates must meet at least one of the eligibility criteria and pass both a written exam and a practical exam. Candidates who do not receive a satisfactory score on the written exam are also required to pass an oral exam.

The Certifying Technical Employee Competence (CertTEC), Aviation Structures is an entry-level certification for technicians who specialize in aviation structure knowledge, fabrication methods, health and safety, inspection and repair, and regulations and documentation. Applicants must meet training or experience requirements and are required to pass a certification exam.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Remote Pilot credential is an intermediate-level credential for individuals who fly remote drones. Remote Pilots operate small unmanned aircraft systems (UAS); a small UAS includes small unmanned aircraft, weighing less than 55 pounds on takeoff, including everything that is on board or otherwise attached to the aircraft. Candidates for the FAA Remote Pilot must be at least 16 years old, able to read, speak, write, and understand the English language, and not have a physical or psychological condition that would interfere with the safe operation of a small UAS. Additionally, FAA Remote Pilot candidates are required to pass an exam.
