Mining and Quarrying

Workers in mining and quarrying production occupations usually start as helpers to experienced workers and learn skills on the job; however, formal training is becoming more important, as more technologically advanced machinery and mining methods are used. Some employers prefer to hire recent graduates of high school vocational programs in mining or graduates of college or technical school program in mine technology. The Mining Education website contains a portal to information on mining educational programs.

In addition, the Department of Labor’s Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has the responsibility of administering the provisions of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act of 1977 and enforcing compliance with mandatory safety and health standards as a means to eliminate fatal accidents, minimize health hazards; and to promote improved safety and health conditions in the Nation's mines.

Mining Industry links can be found at the MSHA website.
